Suspected hostage taker has criminal history in Jacksonville

Nicholas Daquan Humphrey, 23, is now facing armed robbery and 13 counts of kidnapping charges.

Action News Jax searched through court records and found that his criminal history dates back to 2012. While some of the charges are minor traffic infractions, we also found that he was accused of domestic violence in Hillsborough County this year.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office has identified Humphrey as the hostage taker at the Community First Credit Union on Edgewood Avenue.

Police said he threatened 13 hostages, saying that he would kill them, and was holding a gun to their heads while making demands with negotiators.

“There are a lot of details we don’t know. Why he picked that location? We’ve asked ourselves that, and we will again dig into that,” said Sheriff Mike Williams.

In Duval County, Humphrey pleaded guilty to two seat belt violations in 2012. Then, in 2013, he pleaded no contest for not having a valid license and for failing to give information after an accident that involved property damage.

In February, he was arrested in Tampa after being accused of domestic violence, but the charge was eventually dropped.

In September, he was arrested by the Florida Highway Patrol and pleaded no contest to knowingly driving with a suspended or revoked license.

Williams said a motive for the alleged hostage situation is still unclear, but he’s thankful no one was hurt -- an accomplishment he credits to his officers’ training.

“Having a police officer, a victim and a suspect all in the same room together is never where you want to be, but sometimes it’s where you have to be, and that was the case today. So I can’t tell you, the level of professionalism is off the chart,” said Williams.

Williams said they’ll be looking at mental illness as a possible motive. He also said Humphrey was not cooperative with law enforcement this morning and was “over the top” in terms of communication with his officers.
