The FDA and regulating the cosmetic industry

UNITED STATES — Lawmakers proposed the Personal Care Product Safety Act, where cosmetic companies would have to report consumer complaints to the FDA, and the FDA could issue a recall to beauty products.

This would also require the FDA to review a minimum of five personal care ingredients per year.

The non-profit, the Environmental Working Group, says it is dedicated to protecting human health and the environment.

According to its research, the average woman uses 12 products containing 168 unique ingredients every day. Some of those ingredients could be harmful to your health.

“A paraben is a chemical they are worried about potentially being linked to cancer,” Dawn Sollee, with Florida’s Poison Control Centers, said.

Sollee believes companies use some chemicals so products last longer.

“Since a portion of the products are preservatives, it may be a way for them to have a longer shelf life,” she said.

The FDA's website states:

"The FDA-regulated does not mean FDA-approved. FDA does not have the legal authority to approve cosmetics before they go on the market, although we do approve color additives used in them (except coal tar hair dyes)."
