This year, you'll have to sign a waiver when buying fireworks

With the Fourth of July around the corner, fireworks lovers are stocking up.

From Duval County to St. Johns County, sellers have been spotted near busy roadways. What people don’t know is that a number of fireworks are illegal.

Florida law prohibits any recreational fireworks that fly through the air or explode, like Roman candles, mortars and bottle rockets. The only time they’re permitted is if they’re used to scare off birds from farms or fish hatcheries.

If you bought fireworks recently, you may have noticed you had to sign a waiver stating you were over 18 and have read Florida Statute 791. In other words, if someone gets hurt or you get arrested, that’s on you, not the seller.

“There’s all sorts of implications with the law, both state and federal law. Just use good judgement,” said Action News Jax law and safety expert Dale Carson.

Florida’s fireworks statute has long, lengthy language that can be confusing to some people. Carson said if all else fails and you aren’t sure, leave the entertainment to the professionals.
