Jerry strengthens, now a category 1 hurricane

Thursday, Sept. 19:

11 a.m. update: Jerry has strengthened and is now a category 1 hurricane.

5 a.m. update: Wind speeds for Tropical Storm Jerry are up to 70 mph, nearing hurricane strength.

Sustained winds for a category 1 hurricane are 74 to 95 mph. It is located about 575 miles east of the Leeward Islands. It is moving WNW at 16 mph.

Wednesday, Sept. 18:

5 a.m. update: Tropical Depression 10 has strengthened into the tenth named storm of the 2019 season, Tropical Storm Jerry. It is forecast to become a hurricane as it moves near the northern Leeward Islands. It is currently located about 960 miles east of the Leeward Islands and has maximum sustained winds of 45 mph.

Tuesday, Sept. 17:

The First Alert Weather team is tracking Tropical Depression Ten that formed Tuesday morning over the central tropical Atlantic. It is currently located east of the Lesser Antilles.

It could receive a name by tonight. It has maximum sustained winds of 35 mph and is moving WNW at 12 mph.
