WATCH: Frustrated people climbing over stopped train in San Marco

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — If you live, work or visit San Marco, you've probably been stuck by a train that's either moving at snail's pace or suddenly stops on the tracks.

An Action News Jax crew captured cell phone video Tuesday of frustrated people climbing over a stopped train near the Baptist health complex.

Sherri Hartsell works in San Marco and said she gets stopped by a train at least once a week.

"It's very frustrating getting stopped by the train," Hartsell said.

She said she usually leaves her house 15 minutes early because the train is unpredictable.

The Florida Department of Transportation said the trains can block seven intersections for as long as three hours.

FDOT blames the delays on congestion at a CSX rail yard.

Trains are often forced to hold south of the St. Johns River rail bridge while the tracks are cleared of other trains.

Action News Jax reported in June that the City of Jacksonville was awarded more than $17 million in federal funding to help with rail-related traffic.

FDOT said improvements should begin in mid-2020.

If all goes as planned, the project is expected be finished in mid to late 2021.

Drivers said improvements can't come soon enough.
