WATCH: iPhone battery catches fire at St. Johns County repair shop

A cellphone repair technician said an iPhone battery burst into flames while he was working on it an St. Johns County cellphone repair shop.

Video shows the technician run over and grab a fire extinguisher.

“I didn’t have to use it, thankfully,” said Fred Davis, lead tech at iRepairFast. “I was able to isolate the fire and it died down pretty quickly.”

Davis said a customer brought an iPhone 6 Plus in for a new battery.

He said he had just removed the old battery by heating the phone on a hot plate, something he said he’s done hundreds of times.

He said it burst into flames after he laid the battery down to cool off.

This isn’t the first time this month part of a cellphone has caught fire.

Surveillance video captured an iPhone exploding feet away from a worker in a Las Vegas repair shop.

Davis said there were likely problems inside the batteries.

“Sometimes batteries bloat up,” he said. “If you see your glass screen is lifting from the frame of your phone, you definitely have a bad battery on the inside.”

He said old batteries also drain quickly and sometimes cause unexpected cracks in phones.

“Sometimes they’ll shut off at random times," he said. "You plug it back in and it’ll say, 'oh I’m already at 30 percent power' after it just gave you the low power signal."

Davis said batteries have lithium inside, which is highly flammable. He said if the gel around them is exposed to a spark, it can ignite.

Davis said the batteries typically last two to three years. If you see these defects or have a smartphone that is more than two years old, he said you might want to get the battery checked.

He said people should also avoid leaving their phone in the heat.

“Extreme heat does cause the batteries to act up; especially with summer coming up, temperatures are going to be hot in your car,” he said.
