Westside high school student tased and arrested after witnessing bus stop shooting

While many are crediting a quick-thinking bus driver for getting a Westside High School student who was shot in the chest to safety, Duval County Public Schools says two students on the bus were uncooperative when officers arrived.

The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office tells Action News Jax one of the students tried to grab an officer's Taser before it was used on him.

"I just think it's terrible!" said neighbor Roderick Dorsey. "These young people are out of control."

JSO says officers arrived to investigate the shooting of a teenager near a bus stop.

We’re told the student who was tased was taken to Baptist Hospital and is going to be OK.

Both students were arrested.

The mother of the student who was tased tells Action News Jax it doesn’t sound like something her son would do, and at the time of our conversation said her son still wasn’t back in her custody.

Many parents, like Darlene Sinclair, picked up their kids early from school.

She first heard the news from her son, who sent her a text message. Parents we spoke to said they received a phone call from the school.

"And that’s all I heard, and I just jumped in my vehicle to get up here,'' Sinclair said.

She says the shooting is sending shockwaves through the community, and she’s praying for the health and wellbeing of the victim.

Some are wondering if the other children were endangered by the decision to let the injured child onto the bus with other children on board.

DCPS spokesperson Laureen Ricks says in a statement:

“School bus operators are trained to notify their dispatch in an emergency situation. The driver’s job is to drive the bus to a safe location and keep the students safe. The school bus operator today followed training and demonstrated outstanding judgement [sic] in handling this situation.”

Sinclair called the driver a hero.
