Video: Fire destroys Westside home

A Westside home was destroyed by flames on Sunday afternoon.

Firefighters were called to the Appleton Avenue house around 1:30 p.m.

Jacksonville Fire Rescue Department said firefighters had to get out of the house when a back portion of the roof collapsed.

Smoke was still coming from the house an hour after crews arrived. It took 30 firefighters almost an hour to get the fire under control.

No one was in the house when the blaze began. Nearby neighbors say they heard two explosions that shook the ground.

JFRD confirms to Action News Jax there were two propane tanks and live ammunition inside the home.

Officials believe it was an overloaded surge protector to a mini fridge that sparked the fire.

JFRD told Action News Jax the home is a total loss.

The investigation is ongoing.

Firefighters worked to put out flames at a second home in Jacksonville a few hours later.

The fire in the San Jose area began after a candle lit the curtains on fire, fire officials said.
