Westside restaurant has rodent problem

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. — Action News Jax went inside the kitchen of a local restaurant this week after it was shut down after health inspectors found rodent droppings.

Action News Jax anchor Romney Smith visited Adren’s Kafe & Katering of Jacksonville on Hamilton Street.  A health inspector saw dozens of rodent droppings and issued a stop sale for a tray of corn meal because it had a rodent dropping on it. The inspector also noticed expired chicken salad in the refrigerator. The manager said the rodents were coming out of an exposed hole in the ceiling.

“They believe that the rodents were coming through this part of the building because he had some exposed holes that were up in the ceiling and he has since closed them off,” said a manager.

Arden’s Kafe management also called a second pest control company to check out the building. It was temporarily shut down but allowed to reopen the next day after a follow-up health inspection.

“I feel like we've done everything we can as far as doing what we can to prevent the problem from happening again,” said the unnamed manager.

At Centro in St. Augustine, a health inspector reported feta cheese with mold-like growth; issued a stop sale on beef, chicken and fish due to temperature abuse; and found expired hummus and chicken in the refrigerator. A follow-up inspection is required.

At DJ’s Billiard Room in Palatka, a health inspector saw live roaches, dead roaches and issued a stop sale on multiple items including ham, roast beef, hot dogs and cheese because of temperature abuse. A follow-up inspection is required.
