The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is investigating after a Jacksonville woman died after being found unresponsive in a ditch on Garden Street on Thursday morning.

Family members told Action News Jax that the woman is Jenia Stone, 51.

A JSO officer was on his way to work when someone flagged him down around 8 a.m., in regards to a woman unresponsive in a ditch at the 7000 block of Garden Street, according to JSO.

Stone was taken by JFRD to a Jacksonville hospital but died shortly after being taken there, JSO said. Family members were told she may have drowned in the ditch.

Family members said Stone's life had been beset by tragedy in recent years. Two of her children died prematurely. One was shot by JSO during an altercation in 2014. Three months later, another died in a traffic accident.

Stone's longtime partner, Glen Moore, came to the scene as soon as he heard.

"I feel mistreated by [JSO] I feel like they could've at least told us when they already knew. They sent us to Shands to find out," Moore said. I have a lot of questions but no answers. They're not answering any of them.

"Yeah it's suspicious," Moore said. "When I left they was in the truck, sitting there in the truck."

Glen Moore Jr., Stone's son, said his best friend was in his truck with Stone when they ran out of gas.

"They called and said they was broke down. I didn't think nothing about it," Moore Jr. said. "I thought he took them gas and everything was going to be fine."

Moore Jr. says he doesn't believe his mother drowned in a ditch.

"You don't lay down in a ditch and die," Moore Jr. said. "She taught seven kids how to swim. Plus all of her grandkids."

The scene around Garden Street was roped off for hours while JSO conducted an investigation.
