Woman hit by train in St. Augustine while taking pictures

ST. AUGUSTINE, Fla. — A woman was taken to the hospital after being hit by a Florida East Coast Railroad train Monday afternoon on Palmer Street, near U.S. 1 and King Street.

According to Jeremy Robshaw with St. Johns County Fire Rescue, the call reporting the incident came in around 2 p.m.

Sonnie Lee Smith, 33, told the St. Johns County Sheriff's Office that she was standing on the tracks taking pictures of the train as it traveled southbound, but could not remember anything after she was struck by the train.

Smith sustained multiple lacerations and was treated at the scene by St. Johns County Fire Rescue personnel. She was transported to Flagler Hospital and then by air ambulance to UF Health Jacksonville, according to a release from SJSO.
