Yulee toddler drowns while in care of babysitter

UPDATE: Deputies: Yulee toddler who drowned left house through pet door

An 18-month-old boy died after a reported drowning at a Yulee home on Tuesday, officials said.

The boy was taken to the hospital after the reported drowning on Lents Road near Roses Bluff Road at approximately 11 a.m.

Nassau Sheriff Bill Leeper said the toddler managed to get out of the home through a doggy door.

Nassau County Sheriff's Office deputies said the boy was in the care of his 16-year-old babysitter, who was also watching an 8-year-old and a 7-year-old.

The children the teen was watching are not siblings, Sheriff Bill Leeper said. The babysitter's siblings, a 14-year-old and a 6-year-old, were also in the home at the time.

The 18-month-old boy was in an above-ground pool outside a trailer, deputies said.

His death is under investigation.

No one has been charged at this point, deputies said.
