TULSA, Okla. (KRMG) -- Abby Wetherell says the bear appeared out of the brush as she was jogging and began to chase her.

The 12 year old was knocked down by the animal but escaped and kept running before being caught again and attacked.

It was then Abby decided to pretend to be dead and go limp.

It worked, the bear back away allowing her dad and another man to arrive on the scene and chase the animal away.

Abby’s grandfather told the Detroit Free Press "we're very proud of the way she handled herself, she kind of amazed us."

Abby had injuries that required surgery but she’s expected to be released in a few days and have a complete recovery.

Experts warn that playing dead doesn’t always work but in Abby’s case, they’re glad it did.

This is one of several beat attacks in the past several weeks across the country.
