GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) -- The Boy Scouts of America's National Council has voted to ease a long-standing ban and allow openly gay boys to be accepted as Scouts.

Of the local Scout leaders voting at their annual meeting in Texas, more than 60 percent supported the proposal.

Under the proposal drafted by the Scouts' governing board, gay adults will remain barred from serving as Scout leaders.

The outcome is unlikely to end a bitter debate over the Scouts' membership policy.

Some conservative churches that sponsor Scout units wanted to continue excluding gay youths, in some cases threatening to defect if the ban were lifted. More liberal Scout leaders - while supporting the proposal to accept gay youth - have made clear they want the ban on gay adults lifted as well.

You can leave this question on the site as long as you want, but the majority of people in this country are still not going to want gays in the Boys Scouts. Regardless of what the government and the media tries to preach, homosexuality IS NOT NORMAL!!! It is a congenital abnormality. If it was normal, they would be able to reproduce little baby homosexuals. AND before all of the libs and homosexuals start asking about the heterosexuals who cannot reproduce - that also is an abnormality. Normal heterosexuals can reproduce if they wish to.

Much like the Episcopalians that "jumped ship" when the Bishop was elected….Nothing more than homophobia….

Pfft, This is a HUGE mistake in my opinion. If my children were still at home, I would NOT let my son join the scouts. Unreal!! This country is slowly decaying from what it once was.

I'm glad my children are grown, I would NOT have allowed my son to join under these circumstances.
