LAKE FOREST, Calif. (AP) — Saddleback megachurch founder Rick Warren is trying to bring more attention to the problems of people suffering from mental illness following his son's suicide last spring.
The best-selling author of "The Purpose Driven Life" will co-host a daylong conference on mental health next month at Saddleback Church in California.
The March 28 event is co-sponsored by the Roman Catholic Diocese of Orange and the National Alliance on Mental Illness.
Warren says he hopes The Gathering on Mental Health and the Church will encourage other churches to include mental health support groups in their ministries.
Warren's 27-year-old son, Matthew, shot himself last year after struggling with severe depression and suicidal thoughts for years.
More than 10,000 people wrote to Warren after the suicide saying they had also struggled with mental illness.
