Manhunt underway for theft suspect in officer-involved shooting

SOUTH FULTON COUNTY, Ga. — A manhunt is underway for a theft suspect police say shot at an officer while fleeing Thursday evening. A bystander may be wounded.

College Park Police Deputy Chief Ferman Williford says the officer had followed a theft suspect. A citizen flagged the officer down by Heritage Elementary, on Jolly Road, off Old National Highway. A foot chase followed, authorities said.

Williford says the suspect shot at the officer, who fired back at the gunman. The officer was not hit, Williford says, but a female bystander may have suffered a leg wound. As of early Thursday evening, the suspect was still at large and may be injured, Williford said.

Police are looking for the suspect, who is considered armed and dangerous.
