BREVARD COUNTY, Fla. (WFTV) -- The Florida Highway Patrol is investigating after a 13-year-old girl was killed in a crash involving two motorcycles in Brevard County Sunday afternoon.

Officials said the crash happened around 12:00 p.m. on Courtenay Parkway near Taylor Road in north Brevard County.

FHP said 67-year-old Michael Bowers was riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle with the 13-year-old as his passenger. Grace Bowers, 64, was riding her motorcycle behind Michael Bowers when the teen fell off the bike for an unknown reason.

The motorcycles collided and the Bowers, who weren't wearing helmets, were thrown to the ground, troopers said.

The teen died at the scene, according to FHP. Her identity hasn't been released. Michael Bowers is in serious condition and Grace Bowers is in critical condition at a local hospital.

Troopers said they are looking into whether the teen was wearing a helmet. They're also trying to determine if Michael Bowers may have struck a deer shortly before the crash.

Courtenay Parkway was closed in both directions after the incident. The road has since reopened.
