Another dolphin washes ashore in Volusia County
VOLUSIA COUNTY, Fla. (WFTV) -- Another dolphin washed ashore on a Volusia County beach on Saturday, officials said. It's the third beached dolphin in recent weeks.
Beachgoers discovered the dolphin Saturday afternoon on Ormond Beach. Beach Patrol officials said the dolphin was already dead when it washed ashore. A rescue group was on its way to pick up the dolphin and perform a necropsy.
Saturday's beached dolphin is the third to wash ashore in Volusia County in November. Scientists have said a measles-like morbillivirus is responsible for the deaths of hundreds of dolphins along the country's east coast.
A beached dolphin that was rescued in early November also died. Researchers said they suspect the same virus caused its death.
