WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. -- The search is on for several suspected car thieves who drove the vehicle into a canal in the Lake Worth area and fled.

Palm Beach County Sheriff’s deputies report they spotted a car reported stolen just before 4 a.m. near 10th Avenue North and Boutwell Road. Spokeswoman Teri Barbera said deputies believe five people were in the car.

As the deputies attempted to stop the car, the driver drove it into a canal – either deliberately or because they aren’t familiar with the area, Barbera said.

The canal is near Flanigan's at 2401 10th Ave. N. The car did sink into deep, swift moving water, according to fire rescue officials who were called to the scene.

One person is in custody and deputies have set up a perimeter and are searching for others.
