ATLANTA (WSB-TV) -- Troopers say a driver risked his life to get away after police pulled over the van he was driving, which was full of drugs.

The Georgia State Patrol said troopers pulled over the U-Haul van along Interstate 20 at Moreland Avenue in southeast Atlanta Monday evening.

Investigators said the driver hopped out of the van and ran across eastbound lanes of I-20 to avoid arrest.

When the van was searched at a gas station on Boulevard, troopers said they found 11 pounds of marijuana and around 1,000 ecstasy pills.

Channel 2’s Amy Napier Viteri watched as investigators stuffed the drugs into duffel bags.

“A lot, yes, a lot of drugs, and at the time, they were still searching the van,” witness Leo Freddy said.

Freddy works at Burger Joy restaurant in the same shopping center as the gas station.

GSP said they are still trying to determine where the drugs were heading.

The original reason for the traffic stop was speeding, GSP said.
