GWINNETT COUNTY, Ga. (WSB-TV) -- Hundreds of family and friends gathered at Collins Hill High School to remember a recent graduate from Lawrenceville, who was killed after a truck ran into her, while she was crossing a crosswalk in Valdosta.

Lizzie Lohmar, 21, attended Valdosta State University. She played soccer at Collins Hill and went on to be on the first woman’s team at VSU.

She was hit by a truck on Feb. 5 and succumbed to her injuries, after spending several days in the intensive care unit at South Georgia Medical Center. Lohmar was in the designated crosswalk area when she was hit, according to WALB, a television station in Albany, Georgia.

“She fought really hard -- four surgeries, in two days. In the end it was too much. She fought with everything she could. We were with her in the end and I am so thankful for that,” said her mother Margery Lohmar.

At the Collins High memorial after coaches and friends shared memories, they held candles and walked around the track of the school in remembrance.

“I am absolutely overwhelmed. I am uplifted we are so comforted by coaches, teachers, all of Lizzie’s friends,” said Lohmar.

Friends said Lohmar will be remembered for her amazing spirit and passion for life.

“She was one of the most amazing people I knew, the first one do anything for anybody at the drop of the hat. So I had to do this for her,” said Tina Green, who organized the memorial.

Valdosta Police say Michael Laslie was arrested for homicide by vehicle in the second degree, according to WALB.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Elizabeth Joy Lohmar Scholarship Fund for Mathematics, care of VSU Foundation, 1500 N. Patterson St., Valdosta, GA 31698.
