KINGS BAY, Ga. -- A local crew of a Navy submarine will be getting a top award.

The crew of the USS Alaska, based at Kings Bay Naval Base, will receive the 2012 Omaha Trophy.

The award is given to military units demonstrating the U.S. Strategic Command's (USSTRATCOM) highest performance standards.

USSTRATCOM determines the award recipients based on formal evaluations, meritorious achievement, safety and community involvement.

Rear Adm. John Haley will present the 2012 Omaha Trophy during a ceremony at the submarine's home port at Naval Submarine Base, Kings Bay, on Aug. 8.

The USS Alaska is a United States Navy Ohio-class ballistic missile submarine. It has been in commission since 1986.
