CASSELBERRY, Fla. (WFTV) -- The new Red Bug Lake Road flyover opened in Casselberry early Wednesday morning.

There are several signs and some police officers at the intersection to make sure drivers know they can use the flyover and to help navigate them through the new traffic patterns that the changes bring.

Police escorted the first cars across the overpass at around 2:30 a.m.

The $25 million project was meant to alleviate lengthy backups that could form during high traffic times at the intersection of Red Bug Lake Road and State Road 436.

Officials said about 65,000 drivers each day make a left turn from S.R. 436 onto Red Bug Lake Road. The overpass should speed travel up for those drivers.

The flyover ends just outside a Casselberry Fire Station. Flashing lights on the bridge will alert drivers to stop when fire crews are leaving the station.

The flyover was expected to open over the weekend but rain pushed the opening back a few days.
