Pilot in fatal Wellington plane crash identified
WELLINGTON, Fla. (PBPost) -- Leonard W. McGarity, Jr., 58, is the pilot who died Monday after his experimental plane crashed in Wellington, the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Office said today.
McGarity’s plane crashed into a pond off Greenbrier and Aero Club Road. The FAA and National Transportation Safety Board are investigating the crash.
Former Aero Club president Steven Daiagi said McGarity was an American Airlines pilot and flew a U.S. Marines helicopter in Vietnam. Daiagi said he lived two doors down from McGarity in the Aero Club community.
The community has a private 4,000-foot runway that officials believe he took off from before crashing.
