LAWRENCEVILLE, Ga. (WSB-TV) -- Homicide detectives are gathering evidence at a Gwinnett County apartment complex, where a child’s body was found in a trash can early Saturday morning.

Channel 2’s Steve Gehlbach is speaking with Gwinnett investigators outside the Landmark at Coventry Pointe Apartments on Veranda Chase Drive.

Police found the body of a 10-year-old girl after responding to her father's 911 call. Police said he was threatening suicide. He also told them his daughter was dead after drinking some type of chemical.

Officers said they went to the scene and located a man standing in the breezeway of building 1100. He pointed them to a metal trash can in the recreation area. Inside of the trash can was the badly-burned body of the girl.

Police took the girl's father into custody. They said he's been cooperative so far.

Child abuse is more common than you think, especially in certain neighborhoods.

I would like to know the rest of the story before this man is given death threats. For all we know, he found her, called 9-1-1 and then threatened to kill himself. I would die for my children. And I would want to die if I found them like that.
