MARIETTA, Ga. -- Police have arrested a mother who they said had two kids with her when she tried to carjack a taxicab, then stole a pickup truck.
Just after 10 p.m. Tuesday police say they arrested 27-year-old Nicole Evans in Carroll County near the Alabama line after a chase and a series of crashes.
Police and people who saw the bizarre incident told WSB Channel 2's Amy Napier Viteri they are really worried about the two young children.
Witnesses said Evans threw the children into a pickup truck with its engine running outside a gas station and nearly ran over the truck's owner -- all of this after trying unsuccessfully to steal a cab.
A taxi driver said a double stroller was part of a woman's attempt to steal his cab on Marietta Parkway Tuesday evening.
He said the woman with two small children asked for a ride. As he loaded her stroller in the trunk she got in and tried to drive off.
"I rushed to the driver's side and put the car in park," said the taxi driver who only identified himself as Danny.
Danny said the woman grabbed her kids and ran across the busy road to a Chevron station, nearly getting hit by oncoming traffic.
"It was scary," Danny said.
The store owner said the woman then came with her two small children into the store. She looked around for about 30 seconds after noticing the pickup truck running outside and its owner was buying cigarettes. That's when witnesses said she made a run for the truck.
"She jumped in the truck. I told police on the phone that someone was going to get killed," Danny said.
"They're not fastened in or anything she just threw two kids in the car, one of them was probably on the floor, I could see the head of one," witness Cheryl Banks said.
Banks was in the store and said the truck's owner could have been killed trying to stop the woman.
"He was like holding through the window and she was going so fast," Banks said.
"He dragged from here I would say about 2,000 feet. She didn't even stop at the stoplights.
The woman sped off leaving many concerned for the safety of her small passengers," Danny said.
"I'm worried. I am very worried about the kids," Banks said.
According to witnesses, it was the man's work truck that was stolen.
Police told Viteri they are familiar with Evans, who is being held at the Carroll County Jail. She faces several charges, including aggravated assault on a police officer and traffic offenses.
