CLAYTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Clayton County police arrested an 18-year-old man in connection with the March robbery and assault of business owner when he showed up at police headquarters with his sister.
Dashawn Mackey was charged with kidnapping, armed robbery and aggravated assault for allegedly participating in the brutal attack on business owner Paul Moser.
Clayton County Detective John Conwell recognized Mackey when he arrived at police headquarters with his sister, who Conwell requested stop by so he could ask her if she knew anything about the crime.
Conwell approached Mackey with a picture of a man in Moser's convenience store.
"I said, 'Who's that in the picture?' He said, 'Oh that's me,'" said Conwell.
Conwell said Mackey initially denied involvement, saying he was using his sister's bank card.
But Conwell told WSB-TV Channel 2 Action News that bank records show Mackey's assertion is not true.
"I have (bank) usage documentation of my victim's card being used the exact time that he was there," he said. "And I've got video of him actually at the machine using the card."
Conwell said Mackey later admitted he did have the victim's debit card and said one of his co-defendants gave him the PIN
Two other men were previously arrested and three more suspects remain on the loose. Mackey was denied bond by a Clayton County judge.
Moser is still recovering.
Channel 2's Tom Jones asked Conwell if he'd like it if more suspects showed up at police headquarters.
"It'd be great," said Conwell.
