FT. MYERS, Fla. -- A Ft. Myers teen got the ride of a lifetime while boating off the coast of Captiva.
Chris Kreis spotted a rarely seen whale shark and followed his friend's advice to jump in after it.
Kreis was able to jump on the shark and ride it. Kreis said he felt that the fish was not happy, so he let go, and then swam back to the boat quickly because that wasn't the only shark in the water.
"There were two big bull sharks in the area, so that's why I was kind of hauling it back to the boat really quickly," said Kreis.
Whale sharks are not an endangered species, and it's not illegal to ride one, but marine biologists said a close physical encounter can hurt the fish, or, since it is so big, the shark could inadvertently hurt you.
