WAYCROSS, Ga. -- Public works teams have been preparing since early Tuesday morning and Waycross Public Works Director Wilton Deloach says trucks loaded with sand are placed strategically around town. All public works crews are on standby in case of the worst case scenario of ice weighing down power lines - leaving thousands in the cold.

Officials say the sand will help South Georgia drivers and emergency responders.

"To be able to get better traction when they're going up a hill or if they're having to stop at an intersection or whatever to give them a better stopping capability," said Deloach.

The city has been on stand-by before, but Deloach says they haven't had to sand roads since the 1980s. The pending bad weather has some South Georgia drivers nervous.

"The snow doesn't bother me, I know that snow is not really a big deal when driving, but the ice is scary. I mean just a little bit of ice and you can have a serious accident," said Mary Kathryn Henderson.

If black ice forms, Waycross Public Works says bridges are first to be sanded, then main roads, then side streets.

"People in south Georgia certainly aren't familiar with driving on those conditions so we want everybody to stay off the roads," said Deloach.
