1 firefighter killed, 1 hurt battling North Carolina blaze

PINEVILLE, N.C. — A firefighter was killed while battling a three-alarm commercial structure fire in Pineville, North Carolina, on Saturday, Charlotte's WSOC-TV reports.

Crews were dispatched to the scene at the Countryside Shopping Center just after 9 p.m. Saturday. Charlotte Fire Department and Mecklenburg County Fire Departments were both called to the scene to assist.

Charlotte Fire Chief Jon Hannan said a Mayday call sounded while firefighters were fighting the fire.

Hannan said two firefighters were removed from the blaze and transported to Charlotte Medical Center.

Hannan said one Pineville firefighter died and the other firefighter sustained non-life-threatening injuries.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, according to fire officials.

Charlotte Fire Department officials said they will cover the Pineville Fire Department through the night Saturday.

The Mecklenburg County Fire Marshal will take the lead in this investigation.
