The players were in uniform and walking to the stop around 5:22 a.m. in order to play at a tournament when they were hit by a car and died on impact, the Miami Herald reported.

The teens, who are not related, were identified as Gideon Desir, 13, Lens Desir, 15, and Richarde Dumay, 17, the Herald reported. They were part of the Little Haiti Football Club, a nonprofit sports organization that helps low-income children with athletic skills and offers academic tutoring.

The nearly 100 children in the club are either homeless, undocumented or low-income, the Herald reports. The majority of senior participants graduate high school and go to college, some on soccer scholarships.

The team buses went to the tournament missing the three players.

"They let the kids play," Pat Santangelo, a member of the sports organization's board, told the Herald on Saturday night. "Now they are on their way back to the Little Haiti Soccer Park, where they will be told and greeted by grief counselors."

The driver of the car has not been identified. It is unclear if alcohol is a factor. Police are investigating.
