BROCKTON, Mass. — An 8-year-old boy is recovering at home after a light pole fell on top of him.

Earlier this week, Lamont Collins, who attends Downey Elementary School in Brockton, was at recess with his friends when the pole fell on him. He said he tried to run before the pole fell, but it was too late. He said he was scared and thought he was going to die.

“The pole came down on my back,” Lamont said. “I was leaning on the pole, in the school. (I) looked up and it came down on my back.”

“He said all he knows is when he hit the ground, all of his friends came running trying to help him and get the pole off of him,” Lamont’s mother, Melissa Rivera, said.

Rivera said it took five adults to get the rusted pole off her son.

“The pole fell on him...what if it hit him in the head? He could have lost his life. If it hit him any harder in the back he could have broken his back,” she said.

Doctors told Lamont that he has internal bruising on his back.

“It feels like a little bump. It feels a little hard,” he said. “They told me if I run a lot it can bleed inside of me.”

WFXT contacted city and school officials Wednesday afternoon, but there has been no response.

Crews will begin taking down light polls at the school on Thursday.
