General Mills is expanding its recall of flour over a possible link to an E. coli outbreak in 20 states.

The initial recall was made May 31; the expanded recall includes the same brands of flour produced at an earlier date. General Mills released an updated recall notice July 1 due to a "newly reported illness that appears to have stemmed from the consumption of raw dough or batter linked to flour produced last fall."

The company is collaborating with health officials to investigate an ongoing, multistate outbreak of E. coli that may be potentially linked to Gold Medal flour, Wondra flour and Signature Kitchens flour, the company said in a press release. Out of an abundance of caution, a voluntary recall was made, the release said.

General Mills said 38 people were sickened from mid-December through May 3.

The strain of E. coli that may be linked to flour, E. coli O121, can cause bloody diarrhea and dehydration, the company said.
