On Sept. 12, Javier Casarez, 54, shot and killed his wife, Petra Maribel Bolanos De Casarez, 45, and four others before shooting himself in Bakersfield, according to the Kern County Sheriff's Department. The following day, the Casarez family set up the GoFundMe account to help pay funeral expenses, KGET reported.

"The Casarez family is asking for help, even though it's unfortunate what has occurred any donations would be greatly appreciated, all proceedings will be for funeral expenses," the GoFundMe page reads. "They left behind 6 children and aside from what the media has portrayed they were loving & caring parents."

Court documents obtained Thursday revealed that the Casarezes were going through a divorce, KERO reported. Javier Casarez filed the divorce, claiming his wife was cheating on him. The two were officially divorced June 14, the television station reported. According to court documents, they had a court appearance scheduled in October to sort out changes to child support, spousal support, and property control, KERO reported.

Kern County Sheriff Donny Youngblood said Wednesday's mass murder apparently stemmed from a domestic violence situation, KGET reported.

As of late Friday, nearly $4,000 had been raised through the GoFundMe account.
