Rep. Steve Scalise cheered as he throws out first pitch at Nationals' playoff game

House Majority Whip Steve Scalise throws out the ceremonial first pitch before Game 1 of the National League Division Series between the Washington Nationals and the Chicago Cubs at Nationals Park.

WASHINGTON — House Majority Whip, Steve Scalise, who was shot and wounded in June during a practice for the annual Congressional Baseball Game, received a standing ovation Friday night when he threw out the ceremonial first pitch before the Washington Nationals’ playoff game against the Chicago Cubs.

Scalise, R-La., used crutches to reach a spot several feet in front of the mound at Nationals Park before Game 1 of the National League Divisional Series between the Nationals and the defending World Series champion Chicago Cubs, Fox News reported.

Holding onto a walker and wearing a red Nationals jersey with his name and No. 3 on the back, Scalise -- who celebrated his 52nd birthday on Friday, tossed a strike to U.S. Capitol Police officer David Bailey, who was also wounded in the June 13 attack at a baseball field in Alexandria, Virginia. Bailey and his fellow congressmen were practicing for the annual game that pits a team of Democrats against Republicans and is played at Nationals Park, Fox News reported.

Zack Barth and Matt Mika, the other shooting victims, were honored after Scalise’s pitch, Fox News reported.

The Nationals lost 3-0 to the Cubs.
