Retired NYPD officer accidentally shoots self, podiatrist in foot

OCEANSIDE, N.Y. — A retired NYPD police officer accidentally shot himself and a doctor Wednesday morning after the officer's gun discharged, police say.

The former lawman was with Dr. Matthew Nester at his Oceanside, New York, office.

WABC reported that the 77-year-old retired officer removed his licensed 10mm semi-automatic pistol from his briefcase to show Nester.

Police said the gun accidentally discharged a round.

The bullet went through the former officer's thigh and struck the doctor's right foot, officials said.

"There were five ambulances here, cop cars, the guys with the bulletproof vest -- they took each person out," witness Ivy Lager told WCBS. "(The doctor) wasn't passed out. He was on (a) gurney. He was texting someone while they were putting him in the ambulance."

People at the business next door to the office said another doctor rushed in the office to apply a bandage.

The retired officer went to a nearby hospital where he is recovering and is in stable condition.

Authorities said the injuries to the former officer and the podiatrist are not life threatening

An investigation is underway. No criminal charges have been filed.
