Snakes cause power outage at New Mexico high school

RIO RANCHO, N.M. — A power outage Tuesday at a New Mexico high school was caused by a pair of snakes.

Maintenance crews were called Tuesday afternoon to Cleveland High School to find the source of the power outage. According to

, the school has solar panels and the power generated by those panels goes through a transformer box. When workers opened the box, they discovered two bull snakes, one snake disguised as a wire, hanging from the box, and another snake on the ground.

The snakes crawled into an area that carried 12,000 volts. The snakes did not survive, according to KOAT.

According to a message on the Rio Rancho Public Schools Facebook page, the school experienced an electrical power failure “due to snakes getting into the switch gear of the solar field.” The power was restored before students returned Wednesday morning.
