The video produced by the Sandy Hook Promise, a group of parents and spouses of victims of the 2012 massacre at Sandy Hook Elementary School, shows Evan, a student who is searching for a friend.

When Evan etches the message "I am bored" into a table in his school's library, he doesn't think anything more of it. But when someone writes back, Evan is excited about the prospect of making a new friend.

As time goes on, Evan and his mystery friend continue to exchange messages on the table. Evan is shown looking around the lunchroom, hallways and his classes and on social media, trying to figure out his mystery friend's identity.

But as the school year comes to an end, the library closes and leaves Evan unable to communicate with the unknown person.

Later, during a yearbook swap, Evan signs a classmate's yearbook, and a friend of the classmate's recognizes his handwriting.

The two realize their connection and strike up a conversation, happy to have finally connected in person.

The story appears to end well, but in a sudden turn of events, a scary moment forces viewers to re-examine how they might have missed important signs.

The PSA has been viewed on YouTube more than 5 million times and has been shared on Facebook more than 45,000 times.
