Ashland County deputies Zach Pierce and Dylan Wegner not only had to retrieve the animals from the culvert that served as a den, but also deal with the menacing presence nearby of the cubs’ mother, the newspaper reported.

"The mother was slow and groggy from just waking up, and the little cubs were screaming and crying like crazy," Pierce told the Daily Press. "So, we figured we (had) better get them out of the water."

A conservation warden soon arrived at the location, and the bear cubs were put in an open area where their mother could reach them, the newspaper reported.

"It was cool," Pierce told the Daily Press. "It was fun to rescue them. I don't think (the) mom was very coherent after just waking up.

“It was a really cool experience for Dylan and me. I am thinking they would not have lasted too long in there.”
