Woman sues doctor who told her she couldn't get pregnant

A Michigan woman is suing her doctor for emotional distress she says is the result of an unplanned pregnancy.

According to WXYZ, 50-year-old Lori Cichewicz, of Oakland County, said her doctor couldn't perform a permanent birth control procedure on her in 2008 because he said her fallopian tubes were already blocked. He also gave her assurances that she did not need to use contraceptives during intercourse.

In 2011, Cichewicz gave birth to her daughter, Reagan, who has Down syndrome.

Cichewicz is now seeking damages for the emotional distress that were caused by her unplanned pregnancy and points to having a special needs child at her age and the financial burden as factors in her distress, according to WXYZ.

"I'm older, I don't know, will I see her graduate college? Will I see her go to college? Will I see her get married? Will I see her graduate high school? All this is going through my mind," Cichewicz told the news station.

Cichewicz's lawyer, Tim Takala, said that the lawsuit is being filed in an attempt to hold the doctor accountable.

"That's advice that misled Lori," Takala told WXYZ.
