Recap: Denver vs. Ohio

Denver, CO (Sports Network) - Brett Olson scored 15 points as the Denver Pioneers slipped by the Ohio Bobcats, 61-57, in the first round of the 76th annual NIT at Magness Arena.

Also scoring in double figures for the third-seeded Pioneers (22-9) were Chris Udofia and Cam Griffin with 14 points apiece, the latter capturing a team-best 10 rebounds off the bench as well while shooting a perfect 5-of-5 from the floor.

The sixth-seeded Bobcats (24-10) were paced by D.J. Cooper who logged a game- high 16 points and handed out four assists, while Reggie Keely tacked on 12 points. Ivo Baltic made an impression as well with a game-high 15 rebounds in a reserve role.

Ohio shot 44.4 percent from the floor in the first half, compared to 50 percent for the hosts, but the Bobcats also made good on a perfect 5-of-5 at the free-throw line in order to take a 32-30 advantage at the break.

In the second half the visitors led by as many as seven points on a number of occasions, but a 6-0 run by Denver late gave the Pioneers an advantage that eventually turned into a four-point win.

Denver survived despite shooting only 2-of-10 beyond the arc and 15-of-29 at the charity stripe. Luckily, the Pioneers still outscored Ohio at the free- throw line, 15-7.

The Pioneers advance to face Maryland in the next round after the Terrapins defeated Niagara, 86-70, on Tuesday night as well.
