Recap: Quinnipiac vs. Fairfield

Hamden, CT (SportsNetwork.com) - Ousmane Drame scored 22 points, leading four players in double figures, as the Bobcats of Quinnipiac captured an 83-79 win over the Fairfield Stags in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at TD Bank Sports Center.

Drame, who shot 10-of-11 at the free-throw line in the meeting, also pulled down eight rebounds and blocked six shots for the Bobcats (5-2, 1-0 MAAC) in their conference opener after coming over from the Northeast Conference. Zaid Hearst produced 20 points and Kasim Chandler 14 off the bench, while Ike Azotam delivered a double-double consisting of 16 points and a game-high 14 rebounds. Shaq Shannon made up for an 0-of-6 shooting effort with 11 boards and five assists.

Leading all scorers was Marcus Gilbert with 31 points, shooting 11-of-19 from the floor and 6-of-10 behind the 3-point line. Coleman Johnson and Lincoln Davis accounted for 12 points apiece and KJ Rose 11 in the setback for the Stags (1-7, 0-1).

Despite shooting only 38.5 percent from the floor in the first half, Fairfield was able to remain within striking distance at the break, trailing by only six points, 44-38. The Stags would not have been behind had it not been for a 19-4 scoring advantage for the Bobcats at the free-throw line.

In the second half Quinnipiac made good on only 33.3 percent from the floor, but once again the team thrived at the charity stripe, 16-of-21, en route to the four-point win.

For the game, the Bobcats held a huge 35-15 scoring edge at the free-throw line in order to overcome a mere 36.7 percent shooting performance from the field.
