Recap: Houston vs. UAB
Houston, TX (Sports Network) - David Piland passed for 362 yards and a touchdown to push the Houston Cougars to a 39-17 victory over the UAB Blazers in a Conference USA matchup at Robertson Stadium.
The Cougars (3-3, 2-0 C-USA) gained 566 yards of total offense as Piland completed 32-of-44 passes without an interception. Charles Sims amassed 133 yards on 26 carries while Shane Ros reeled in seven passes for 114 yards and a score. Phillip Steward anchored the defense with 13 total tackles, three tackles for loss, 2.5 sacks, and an interception.
For UAB (1-5, 0-2), Austin Brown completed 20-of-43 passes for 302 yards and a touchdown with an interception. Jamarcus Nelson tallied a team-high 106 yards on six receptions. Marvin Burdette recorded a season-high 17 tackles to lead the Blazers' defensive unit.
Houston struck first as Piland completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Ros at the 9:52 mark of the first period.
UAB came right back as Brown connected with Jay Davis for a 16-yard touchdown pass to even the score.
The Cougars went back in front with 3:35 left in the opening quarter as Matt Hogan chipped in a 23-yard field goal.
Hogan added two more field goals in the second quarter to give Houston a 16-7 lead at halftime.
The Cougars extended their advantage after the break as Kenneth Farrow rushed one-yard across the goal line to punctuate a nine-play, 75-yard drive. Hogan made a 29-yard field goal at the 7:49 mark of the third quarter to make Houston's advantage 26-10. Ryan Jackson got into the mix with a 10-yard touchdown rush and Hogan booted a 52-yard field goal to send Houston into the final quarter with a 36-10 lead.
Hogan connected on another field goal in the fourth quarter, this one from 26 yards out, with 12:50 left in regulation.
UAB finally stopped the run with 4:37 on the clock as Franklin rushed four yards for a touchdown, but it was too little too late.
The Blazers struggled to run the ball and had just a 1.3 yard average per carry.Game Notes
