Austin, TX (Sports Network) - Texas fired defensive coordinator Manny Diaz on Sunday, less than 24 hours after the Longhorns allowed the most rushing yards in a game in school history.

Texas surrendered a whopping 550 yards on the ground in Saturday's 40-21 loss to unranked BYU, which knocked the Longhorns out of the latest Top 25. Cougars quarterback Taysom Hill piled up 259 rushing yards and three touchdowns.

Former NFL assistant Greg Robinson was hired to take over Diaz's duties and will begin a second tour of duty with the Longhorns' program. He also served as Texas' DC under head coach Mack Brown in 2004, prior to a four-year stint as the head coach of Syracuse.

"Our performance on defense last night was unacceptable, and we need to change that," Brown said on Sunday. "Greg will be here tonight and get with the staff and players to start preparing for Ole Miss (next week's opponent). He will be running our defense immediately.

"His familiarity with the staff and players should make for a smooth transition. He knows this place, did a terrific job in leading our defense before, and I'm excited to have him back on the field."

Diaz was named Texas' defensive coordinator after Will Muschamp left to take the head coaching position in December of 2010. He had previously held the same post at Mississippi State in 2009 and spent four years as the DC at Middle Tennessee State before joining the Bulldogs.

Robinson, 61, was the defensive coordinator for a pair of Super Bowl champion teams during a six-year run with the Denver Broncos from 1995-2000. He had been working as a video analyst for the Longhorns since July.

"I've been around the team a lot, watched all of their film and have been self scouting and scouting opponents since I came on board in July," said Robinson. "Because of Longhorn Network, I've also been able to see these guys for two to three years and am very familiar with the personnel."

Robinson's most recent stop as a defensive coordinator came under Rich Rodriguez at Michigan from 2009-10.
