Oakland, CA (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder Ryan Sweeney on the 60-day disabled list Tuesday with a fractured left rib he sustained over the weekend.

Sweeney hurt himself while colliding into the outfield wall at Seattle's Safeco Field after catching a fly ball during the third inning in Saturday's game against the Mariners. He will be prevented from performing baseball activities for approximately 4-to-6 weeks.

Prior to sitting out Sunday's series finale, Sweeney had started 14 consecutive contests in center field with David DeJesus currently sidelined with a sprained shoulder, and was batting .295 with four home runs and 15 RBI over 44 games this season.

Outfielder Dave Sappelt, who was hitting .269 with two homers and 34 RBI at Triple-A Iowa, was recalled from the minors to fill Sweeney's roster spot.

The Cubs also promoted pitcher Chris Rusin from Iowa, with the left-hander tabbed to start Tuesday's game at Oakland after Chicago traded scheduled starter Scott Feldman to Baltimore earlier in the day.

Rusin went 2-3 with a 6.37 ERA in seven starts with Chicago last season, and has compiled a 7-7 mark with a 3.27 ERA over 17 appearances (16 starts) with the I-Cubs thus far in 2013.
