Milwaukee, WI (Sports Network) - The Chicago Cubs have designated erstwhile closer Carlos Marmol for assignment on Tuesday.

The right-hander went 2-4 and blew three of his five save chances while compiling a 5.86 ERA in 31 appearances this season.

The 2008 All-Star recorded 38 and 34 saves during the 2010 and 2011 seasons, but his ERA went from 2.55 to 4.01.

The 30-year-old Marmol ranks third in team history with 117 saves. He has gone 23-32 with a 3.50 ERA in 470 relief outings and 13 starts since debuting with the Cubs in 2006.

The Cubs filled the roster spot by selecting the contract of outfielder Brian Bogusevic from Triple-A Iowa. Bogusevic, 29, hit .319 with 10 homers, 14 doubles and 32 RBI through 78 games this season.

An Illinois native, Bogusevic spent parts of the previous three seasons with Houston, batting .227 in 252 games.
