Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - The injury-ridden New York Yankees have acquired infielder Chris Nelson from the Colorado Rockies in exchange for cash considerations or a player to be named later.

The move comes a day after the Yankees placed infielder Kevin Youkilis on the 15-day disabled list with a lumbar spine sprain. Youkilis joined regulars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez, Curtis Granderson and Mark Teixeira on the DL.

Nelson was designated for assignment after hitting for a .242 average with four RBI in 21 games for the Rockies this season. The 27-year-old is a career .279 hitter in parts of four seasons in Colorado after being selected in the first round of the 2004 draft.

Nelson has seen time at third base, second base and shortstop in his career.

To make room on the roster, the Yankees moved catcher Francisco Cervelli to the 60-day disabled list.
