Miami, FL (SportsNetwork.com) - The Miami Marlins made their second notable free-agent signing of this offseason on Friday, signing veteran infielder Rafael Furcal to a one-year contract.

The Miami Herald reported Thursday that the deal contains a $3 million base salary and includes incentives.

Furcal earned his third career selection to the National League All-Star team while with the St. Louis Cardinals in 2012, but missed all of last season after undergoing Tommy John surgery on his right elbow in March.

The 36-year-old batted .264 with five home runs, 49 RBI and 12 stolen bases for the Cardinals in 2012, and owns a .281 average with 113 homers, 585 RBI and 314 steals over 13 seasons in the majors.

Furcal has spent the majority of his career as a shortstop, but the Marlins plan to use him at second base opposite youngster Adeiny Hechavarria in the middle of the infield.

The 2000 NL Rookie of the Year's addition comes on the same day Miami officially announced the signing of ex-Boston Red Sox catcher Jarrod Saltalamacchia to a three-year contract.
