Bronx, NY (Sports Network) - There was a double dose of bad news for the New York Yankees on Tuesday, as third baseman Kevin Youkilis is headed for back surgery and first baseman Mark Teixeira was placed on the 15-day disabled list.

Youkilis had been placed on the 15-day disabled list last Friday with a lumbar strain, but multiple reports state that surgery is needed to repair a herniated disc which will result in a 10-to-12 week recovery track.

The 34-year-old has seen two separate stints on the DL this season due to the bothersome back issue, and has struggled to a .219 average, two home runs, seven doubles and eight RBI in 28 games.

Teixeira, on the other hand, is sidelined due to a right wrist injury. In 15 games this season, he has struggled mightily, hitting .151 with three homers and 12 RBI.

The switch-hitting slugger began the season on the 15-day disabled list after suffering a strained wrist tendon during the World Baseball Classic on March 6. He was transferred to the 60-day disabled list in May, then officially activated on May 31.

New York also recalled pitcher Adam Warren and outfielder Zoilo Almonte from Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and designated pitcher Chris Bootcheck for assignment.

The seven-year veteran Bootcheck allowed a run in one relief inning during his only appearance for the Yanks on June 14, making his return to the majors following a four-year absence.
