St. Petersburg, FL (Sports Network) - The Tampa Bay Rays placed designated hitter Luke Scott on the 15-day disabled list prior to Saturday's game against Toronto.

Scott, who missed the season's first month due to a strained calf, is suffering from lower back spasms and hasn't played in the Rays' last two games. The lefty-swinging veteran is hitting .249 with nine home runs and 39 RBI over 78 games for the year.

Tampa Bay activated reliever Brandon Gomes from the 60-day DL to take the available roster spot. The right-hander hasn't pitched in the majors since May 7, having missed three-plus months with a strained right lat muscle.

Prior to the injury, Gomes appeared in 14 games and went 0-1 with a 5.40 earned run average.

To make room for Gomes on the 40-man roster, relief pitcher Jesse Crain was transferred to the 60-day DL.

Crain, acquired from the Chicago White Sox just prior to the July 31 non- waiver trade deadline, is currently sidelined with a sprained right shoulder. He is eligible to be reinstated on August 29.
